Hypnosis-Change Your Mind And Change Your Life!

Hypnosis to me is a way of recreating my life story from this moment forward. I believe when we are born we are from birth imposed upon with a set of predetermined ideas, thoughts, beliefs, or as I like to refer to them-tapes. We are in a sense hypnotized to live, think, behave, and believe in a certain way imposed on us by our families, teachers, churches and society. These ideas that we have learned early on may not be in any way a reality that will benefit us for the rest of our lives. Many of these ideas are simply someone else’s beliefs imposed on us. We take all of this into our subconscious as truth and often times let this become our belief system for life.  These ideas may be positive or negative, true or false but none the less, they have a big influence on who we become and the way we will think about ourselves and impact the outcome of our lives. These outside influences unknowingly program our subconscious mind into believing that which may not be true or healthy for us. These thoughts may not have any benefit towards what we would like to accomplish or become in our lives. We may have been told we are not smart enough, or we are too big, or we are too small, or we do not have enough money, or we are not the right color.

Many people go throughout their life believing these mistruths and remain unhappy and unfulfilled simply because they do not realize they can reprogram their subconscious mind and recreate these unhealthy tapes. This is where hypnosis comes in. This is where our computer in our mind can be reprogrammed with new healthy fulfilling tapes and those old unfulfilling tapes removed.Through hypnosis we can reprogram our subconscious mind and become what we truly want and were meant to be. Through hypnosis we can get into contact with our subconscious mind and reprogram all those negative false beliefs we have been carrying around with us all of our life. We can get in touch with our inner being and recreate our lives to be all that it was suppose to be.The possibilities are endless. All we need to do to accomplish this is to just imagine what we want, feel it with enthusiasm, and believe it in our heart and hypnosis will take us there. Desire, belief and expectancy are all we need to change our lives with hypnosis. It is so sad that people go through their lives with misconceptions of who they really are and what they could actually become and or accomplish.

It seems so true that thoughts are things. What we think about all the time truly does come about. People need to realize they have some control over their lives. God gave us a magnificent subconscious mind to use to create our reality through our thoughts and imagination. “So as a man thinketh, so shall he be”.  So true are these words if we would only pay attention and act on these truths. Hypnosis can help us to think in positive ways to help us create a new reality which in turn could help create a more positive universe.Just imagine if all people would learn self hypnosis and reprogram their subconscious mind to live a more rewarding and happy life. It would help them to accomplish their desires, therefore making it easier to be kinder to others. It all begins with self. If we are individually fulfilled and love ourselves we are much better able to love others as well. If society as a whole were happy with themselves and more fulfilled in their individual lives, they would be less likely to be envious of others. This could cause a decrease in crime and abuse of mankind in general. If we all could only learn how to use what we were all gifted with, which is our subconscious mind, our world could be a better place.

Hypnosis is a way of creating miracles. Disease can be cured. There have been people whom have been cured through hypnosis when all other medical treatment has failed. This goes to prove that many, if not all diseases, are due to faulty thinking and programming of the subconscious mind. Through hypnosis we can learn to manage stress which frequently is linked to many of our diseases. Cancer, obesity, ulcers, colitis and anxiety are only to name a few. Through hypnosis we can assist our immune system in the eradication of cancer cells by just imagining the cancer cells are being attacked by protecting army cells. Our subconscious mind will believe anything that we suggest when under hypnosis. We can learn to control our anxiety levels and learn to see our stressors from a different perspective. We can lose weight by learning to react to food in a more healthy way and learn to think like a thin person. There is virtually no end to what can be accomplished with hypnosis.

For myself, I would like to rid myself of the old tapes in my subconscious mind. I desire to increase my confidence, let go of old hurts and begin my life at fifty. I have learned over time that no matter what we believe, that becomes our reality. We can change our old programs. People whom have mental illnesses live in that reality even if it is not real to others. Whatever we think, is true to us. We all live in our subconscious minds. We need to use hypnosis to build on what will make us fulfilled in our life and make us happy. Whether this means us building on our self confidence, learning to forgive, reducing pain, or healing from disease. Through hypnosis, we can reprogram our subconscious mind and change our lives. Again if we would just remember: “As a man thinketh, so shall he be” and, “Ask and it shall be given to you,” then all we need is to have belief, desire and expectancy, and hypnosis will take us there.

Pain free and drug free birth? Yes! It is possible, and I will tell you how

In today’s society a common question I get asked when I explain what I do for a living is, “Why would anyone go natural?” To answer that question I think we need to start at the beginning, we need to go back to how our mother’s, mother’s, mother had a baby.

Let’s first start with the basics of the body during the last month of pregnancy. In the last month of pregnancy, the cervix softens and ripens like a piece of fruit. The body begins to release a cocktail of hormones that allows the mother’s body to change and open in ways it didn’t before. When a women’s birthing time begins, her uterus begins to contract, moving her baby down into the pelvic cavity and lining him/her up for the birth process. As birth progresses, the contractions become stronger, the cervix stretches and opens, and the baby moves lower and rotates, eventually moving down the birth canal. With each contraction, there is a signal to the brain and oxytocin is released. With the release of oxytocin, the contractions increase in intensity. As the contractions increase, more oxytocin is released and the contractions become stronger and more power.

When women think of natural birth they think of one thing, Pain! It is important to understand that the sensations of the contractions in labor are valuable. The positions and activities she chooses in response to what she feels actually help labor progress by increasing the strength and efficiency of the contractions and encouraging the baby to settle in and move down the birth canal. Women act in a way that helps them to feel comfortable. Their movements during birth are actually facilitating the dance her baby does to move down and out her birth canal. When the sensation is entirely removed, the feedback system is disrupted and birth can actually slow down or stop. As labor progresses more hormones are released, one of the major ones being endorphins. (and they are more potent than morphine) As a result, the positive feedback of the endorphins over rides the pain sensations that she may be feeling. When a women is allowed to labor in the manner that fits her, and she is fully aware of her body, and her body’s needs, she is much more likely to help the birth move along faster.

Years ago women birthed with other women. They were surrounded by birth, it was a normal part of life.  Women were surrounded by other women who had already gone through birth. They guided her, and encouraged her, and allowed her to be mindful of her body and the desires of her body. Over the years we lost that art. Birth become medical, more than that, it became an event we needed to be “delivered” from. We stepped away from embracing our bodies, and trusting them. Instead, we have turned to blindly trusting medical staff and drugs to do the work for us.

When a baby is born, free of drugs, they are more likely to be responsive, alert, and breastfeed easier. Babies born without drugs have faster delivery times, and the mother’s have faster recovery times.

There are many options out there for women today who desire a natural birth. As a doula, professional birth coach, I have had the pleasure of seeing these options at work. The best thing I have found that helps mother’s to have an easier natural birth is Hypnosis. Hypnosis for childbirth is a growing trend because it allows the mother to move around and talk while staying completely comfortable in hypnosis. Women are learning how to have their minds work for them while birth, rather than against them. While using Hypnosis for birth, women are calm, focused, and in-tune with their bodies. They learn to trust their body and its ability to birth their baby.  I have had the wonderful pleasure of watching women become mothers, while deeply relaxed in Hypnosis.

A few years ago I was attending a birth, and that mother was using Hypnosis for birth. I watched how her birth was so drastically different from all the others I had seen. After supporting this woman through one of the most amazing births I had ever seen, I set out to learn more about the method she had chosen for her birth. I learned about Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis course, and I was sold. The Course taught mothers how to trust their bodies, as well as how to produce real, medical Hypno-anesthesia. These mothers were approaching their births with confidence and empowerment. They had easy, comfortable, and in some cases completely pain-free childbirths.

Benefits of using hypnosis for childbirth: * Fewer drugs or no drugs at all means less risk of side effects on mother and baby. * Shorter labors – resistance of the birthing muscles as a response to pain is minimized or eliminated. * An awake, energized mother, due to total relaxation throughout the birthing process. * A calm, peaceful birthing environment. * Breech and posterior babies can be turned using hypnosis. * Fewer interventions and complications during labor. * Babies who are better sleepers and nursers due to fewer drugs in their systems.

A few things to remember about Hypnosis:

* All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; the hypnotherapist is only the guide. A person chooses to enter into a hypnotic state, stay in and come out at will.* Approximately 90-95% of the population can be hypnotized. Willingness, belief and motivation have great influence over hypnotizability. * During hypnosis you are neither asleep nor unconscious, and will always “come out” when you wish. * Stronger-minded and stronger-willed people are easier to hypnotize; not the other way around as is usually assumed. * You cannot be made to divulge information or do anything against your will while in hypnosis.

*Hypnosis is not Satanic or religion-oriented at all, just a way to direct your inner mind toward the positive.

Dealing with Labor Pain Effectively

As a first labor can last up to 15 hours, check whether the hospitals policy allows you to eat during labor – these days it usually does – so, pack a few snacks such as chocolate bars, which will give you instant energy. In fact, shortly before labor, the ability of your stomach to absorb food decreases, so you should eat only easily digested food. This is a local anesthetic which is administered between the space of your spinal column and your spinal-cord. The procedure effectively numbs the nerves around your uterus and on occasions can render your legs numb making it difficult or impossible to be mobile. If you want to practice hypnosis for minimizing labor pain at home, then you can also buy some audio hypnosis tapes for that purpose. If you have never practiced or experienced hypnosis before, then it’s better to start with self hypnosis and gets an idea about the whole concept. Once you know how to hypnotize yourself, and learn the art of communicating with your subconscious mind, you will develop a better understanding towards hypnosis. A good way to start process of self hypnosis is through music. Some women brave the storm and choose to deliver their baby naturally without drugs. But the option is there should they change their mind if the pain becomes unbearable. Many moons ago when women experienced their first sharp spasm of labor to the last exhausting push, pain relief was not up for negotiation because there was none. Times have changed considerably and women have choice. Women today write their own birth plan which might include going without medication, opting for alternative medicine and non-drug approaches to manage their pain. The contractions occur and then you have a period of relief from the pain. In order to time the period between contractions, you start timing when the contraction stops and stop when another contraction begins. If you are truly in the early stages of labor, this time period will become shorter and shorter. You can also time the duration of the contraction to see how long it lasts. As the space between the contractions decrease, the duration of the contractions increase.Another form of medication is regional anesthetic. Most common is the use of epidurals, which block the pain from waist-down. It is given during the last stage of the labor. This is administered through an injection in the spine. In this, you do not feel any labor pain, but you will feel tightening and pressure when a contraction would strike. This way you can time your pushing efforts with the contractions. This medication has almost no side-effects, but it is not effective on some women.Involving a low electrical current being utilized by blocking off the pain receptors in the brain whilst at the same time stimulating the release of endorphins, thereby promoting natural pain relief. Tens machines are relatively affordable and can be hired or purchased and are a good investment to sort out prior to going into labor given not all hospitals have these machines available.

Hypnosis for Getting Over Your Ex

It’s difficult to get over the loss of a relationship. Difficult – no, excruciating. It’s as though a skilled surgeon came in and removed something vital – a necessary part of you; and now you have this empty, hollow space inside. Worse, you feel like you don’t even have control over your own thoughts. You find that your thoughts naturally go to that person, taking up so much of your energy; and you’d give just about anything to make it stop; to just feel some sense of peace; some sense of completeness again.

Despite reading all the right books, talking to friends and getting some good pointers, going out and keeping yourself “busy”, or becoming a serious workaholic, you find none of it is working, at least in the long term. You’re so busy trying to do all the “right” things, anything to get your mind off that relationship, but with no change. It’s easy to feel helpless. So, where should you begin? With yourself…

We have very high expectations of ourselves, don’t we? So, your relationship ended on Monday and you think that by the weekend, you’re going to be feeling so much better, after the initial hump – only to discover that it doesn’t work that way. You will find that you have good days and bad days, good mornings and bad mornings, good nights and long, difficult nights. And they will strike when you least expect. You’ll have a good few days, and then all of a sudden, without warning, you’re feeling blue.

Remember that you are not a superhero. You are human. It doesn’t take a few days to create a relationship, and it certainly doesn’t take a few days to move on from one. This is a process. Give yourself time to work through your feelings. Give yourself time to find out who you are, what makes you feel good. Try something new. Mainly, just be you. Over time, you will know where you want to go from here. You don’t need to know right this moment. When you give yourself the time you need to heal, little by little, you’ll find yourself ready to take on some new goals, to look in a new direction. It will happen.

We spend a lot of time resisting our feelings, because we think they are wrong or negative, or maybe we’re just sick of the way we feel. When we choose to resist these natural emotions, we’re choosing to not express them. This causes them to become bottled up inside. It’s similar to shaking a can of Pepsi. Once opened, it’s like an explosion… If you bottle things up over a long period of time, your hidden pain will eventually manifest somehow. Your hidden feelings can lead to unconscious behaviour, to stress, anxiety, and to physical illness.

So given all that, is it such a risk to honour your feelings in the moment, and feel them when they want to be felt? You need to move through them at their own pace. I’m reminded of Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. If you are one of the few people on earth who hasn’t read this book, you MUST read it right now. As Eckhart explains, by resisting your primary emotion, you now have a secondary emotion of resistance; so in effect, you have two emotions you’re dealing with instead of one. Here you are, deeply saddened, and you choose to add resistance to the sadness to cover it up. Do you know how much work that is? Maybe you feel angry, but you won’t let it out, so you place the blanket of resistance on top. Yet, the anger is still there. You’re now dealing with anger and resistance. We do this all the time. Wouldn’t it be so much easier to just have the one emotion – the sadness or the anger, and deal with just that? Then, you can honour that emotion, by expressing it so you can heal and move on. On some level, we believe that by resisting our primary emotion, we are saving ourselves from it, but it doesn’t work that way. By using resistance, we are in for a long haul.

Many feel they’ve cried and cried and cried, and just don’t want to cry anymore. It is taking too much out of them. “For how long do I need to cry?” The answer is as long as it takes. Let it out. Don’t resist it. Let all your feelings out in that moment, and then move on to something else. Expect yourself to have to run this course again and again. One moment, feeling at peace, and the next, angry. Move through that anger. Expect that you’ll need to repeat it.

Some don’t want to disappoint their children, friends or other family members. They feel the need to put on a happy face, so their friends and family won’t worry too much, or judge too much. I’ll tell you one thing right now – you are WAY too important to do that to yourself. You deserve the time to honour yourself and your feelings as they come along; knowing they will pass. This is a necessary part of your growth. You know when you’re on the airplane and they give you the safety dance before flying? What do they say? They tell you that if you’re with a child or someone who needs assistance, and the air pressure drops, put YOUR mask on first, and then assist the other person. This is because you are of no help to that other person until you are in a position to help them. So, how do you go about helping yourself? Ask for help.

Using hypnosis for getting over your ex is all about removing the resistance, and finally honouring your feelings – whatever they may be. In all honesty, this is what I do in hypnosis sessions most of the time with my clients. There is this inner struggle within them, and I need to help them get past their self-imposed titanium walls of resistance. Those walls they thought protected them, in reality, just helped them to “get by”. Once we can take those walls down, there is always an emotional release. Sometimes it’s subdued, and sometimes it’s dramatic. But, one way or the other, it comes out. What happens next? The only words I can think to describe it are peace, self-revelation, self-honour, self-respect. What do my clients say? “I wish I had done this a long time ago.” “I can’t believe how free I feel.” They have a newfound sense of freedom within them that they haven’t felt in years. Sometimes, there is regret that they allowed themselves to live in resistance for so long; that perhaps they wasted a lot of good years. They are new people when they leave. “New” might not be the word; it’s more like they have finally honoured who they truly are.

Hypnosis can be very powerful and liberating. Through hypnosis, those memories that used to have such a negative stronghold on you, now will turn peaceful. Hypnosis bypasses your critical faculty of mind and allows new, supportive information to make their way to your subconscious. When that happens, you are able to make positive and lasting changes in your life.

Sometimes through hypnosis we discover that the pain we are feeling from this breakup, is not only a result of the breakup. That is not to say that the breakup is not painful in and of it’s own right. But, sometimes the feelings associated with the breakup act as a trigger in the subconscious to bring up hurt from other experiences. They could be from past relationships, or even from childhood. This is quite common. Through hypnosis, we access the subconscious mind and find the source to our true feelings. Once you are able to bring those feelings to awareness, it is like we’ve built a whole new foundation inside of you. It is truly liberating.

Hypnosis really is just a focused concentration. It is very relaxing, and you find that stress and tension seem to just melt away. You connect with yourself on a whole new level, and see yourself through new eyes. When you see yourself from this new perspective, you will find that others soon will see you from this place too, helping you to attract healthy and loving relationships.

Seeing a Clinical Hypnotherapist to help you come to terms with your true feelings, and building a new, solid foundation is the most powerful step you can take. Your increased sense of freedom will transform your thoughts, your mind and your life. You can also try self-hypnosis. I offer some recommended products at the bottom of this page that you can buy direct online for getting over a relationship.

There are many others out there going through a painful breakup. In fact, the divorce rate is hovering around 67%. Some dated a short time, and others were married for what seems an entire lifetime. Getting over a relationship is not something you need to go through alone though. I find that the majority of people who come to me for hypnosis to get over a relationship, are people who do not want to burden their families or friends. Chances are you know people, probably family members and good friends that have gone through a breakup recently. No one expects you to be a hero. Sometimes you just need someone to listen.

I want you to know that you are an amazing person! And as you go through this process, you will learn so much about yourself. You have so much potential! You have the potential to love again and allow yourself to be loved. You have the potential to reach new goals! Yes, you had a relationship that didn’t last. But what have you learned? You’ve learned about your strength – the strength to be, to honour yourself and your emotions. You’ve learned that you are a divine being and worthy of peace and joy in your life. You will discover so much about yourself. And over time, you may find that the breakup ended up being a catalyst in your life to move you towards your dreams. Don’t resist that possiblity. Honour where you are today, at this moment, knowing that you have so much to offer the world.

Childbirth Hypnosis, will it work for me?

As a Hypnobabies® childbirth educator and doula, I am often asked what exactly childbirth hypnosis is. To start, you must understand a few things about Hypnosis.

1st – All Hypnosis is self Hypnosis.

A Childbirth Hypnosis instructor is a guide. Each mother chooses to enter hypnosis, stay in hypnosis, and come out of hypnosis whenever she wants.

2nd – About 90%-95% of the population can be hypnotized.

If you are willing to enter hypnosis and choose to accept the suggestions of hypnosis, then you are a great candidate for Hypnosis for birth.

3rd – You can not be made to do something against your will while in hypnosis.

All hypnosis is self hypnosis, and you will only do what you would normally feel comfortable doing. You are in complete control.

4th – Hypnosis has been used for years for medical and dental procedures with great results. The patients are completely comfortable and have no drugs and no pain.

Since hypnosis has been used for years for people with life-threatening allergies to anesthesia, and those patients feel no pain, we know that we can use hypnosis for childbirth. With hypnosis, we are basically reprogramming the mind to believe and to know that childbirth can be easy and comfortable, and in some cases, pain-free. During labor, a woman will progress more quickly when she is relaxed, and will remain more comfortable. With childbirth hypnosis, women practice daily with self-hypnosis to retrain the mind to stay calm and relaxed.

In many cultures childbirth is an easy and natural process. Many women experience birth as easy and comfortable, so why not here? Can we experience a pain-free birth too? Yes we can, but there are many variables that affect a women’s birth experience. The expectations of birth are the biggest variable. Each Hypno-couple mist set a realistic view of birth, and their birth outcome. They must understand their choices, and the outcome of those choices.

So, how effective is childbirth hypnosis? Statistics will vary by the program and method chosen, depending on the length and number of hypnosis sessions, the materials used in each, and the skill of the hypnotherapist or teacher, as well as the dedication and compliance to the program of each birthing couple. Ideally, hypnosis for childbirth instructors will have backgrounds in both hypnotherapy and childbirth education, and be able to address each woman’s personal needs. With adequate preparation and trust in the natural process of birth, most women can have much more relaxed and comfortable births, with many actually free of pain. It is important to know that the childbirth hypnosis program you choose to use will directly affect your success in having a comfortable birth, so educate yourself before choosing. (taken from Kerry Tuschhoff, Founder of Hypnobabies®)

There are many benefits to using Hypnosis for childbirth.

1- Fewer Drugs or no drugs at all, which means little to no chance of side effects.

2- Shorter Labors

3- Calm, peaceful birthing environment.

4- Fewer interventions during the birth

5- Fewer complications during birth

6- Breech babies can be turned using hypnosis.

7- Awake and alert babies, do to no drugs in their systems at birth. (and isn’t that what we all want?)

When it comes to childbirth hypnosis, your success depends highly upon the course you choose, the amount of hypnosis taught in the course, and your ability to apply yourself and practice your new skills. Hypnosis is the upcoming trend in natural childbirth, because it allows the mothers to have the best of both worlds; an un-medicated birth, and a pain-free experience.

Chronic Pain Management with Cognitive Therapy and Hypnosis -Harnessing the Power of the Mind to Relieve the Distress of the Body

Chronic Pain Management with Cognitive Therapy and Hypnosis

Harnessing the power of the mind to relieve the distress of the body

When you get injured or have surgery, you expect to hurt for a while, but you know that in time, you’ll heal and the pain will leave. You recognize discomfort as a symptom but trust that treatment and time will help. While you wait for your body to mend, medication and physical therapy provide relief. Chronic pain is another story. Chronic pain is persistent pain that often has outlived its usefulness. Whether it’s the burning, shooting leg pain associated with sciatica or the aching, stiffness and soreness associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain is unrelenting and unremitting.

Sometimes, it’s an aftereffect of an injury that appears to have healed. In some cases, chronic pain seems to develop out of the blue, with no discernable injury or tissue damage. Pain may also result from a number of non-medical causes. For instance, sometimes repressed anger and anxiety may manifest themselves in physical symptoms of pain. Over time, physical pain takes an emotional toll, making the body hurt even more. Anxiety about the condition magnifies unpleasant sensations and the result is a vicious cycle. Fear, anxiety, isolation, depression, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can be the hallmarks of living with chronic pain. But chronic pain doesn’t have to rule your life. It has been said that pain may be mandatory, but suffering is optional. When considering treatment for chronic pain, both medical and psychological interventions are necessary.

Chronic pain conditions produce enduring psychological effects such as irrational thinking and uncomfortable emotions – in other words, suffering. Pure pain as a pure sensation by itself is not as persistently wrathful, punishing or extremely bothersome as pure pain plus emotional suffering. The pain may take time to heal but the emotional overlay of pain can be transformed with cognitive therapy, group support, and self-hypnosis. Many people with chronic pain frequently become depressed. When their thinking and feelings are chronically negative, they often have urges to indulge in self-defeating or compulsive behaviors such as alcohol abuse, overuse of medication, or addiction to pain killers. Unhappiness caused by chronic pain also effects relationships with others; spouses and families may suffer. Some people may become socially isolated. Others may become increasingly dependent on others to take care of them which may put stress on interpersonal relationships. Couples counseling may be indicated.

Psychotherapy for chronic pain also focuses on dealing with the stressors people living with pain on a daily basis experience: Important factors such as disability insurance, financial stress, loss of work, diminished self-esteem, litigation complications, frustration with workman’s comp, and family stress are important components of the pain picture and treatment is designed to address these and other issues of concern to you.

What can Hypnotherapy do for my pain?

Both sensory pain and unpleasant emotions can be lessened with hypnosis. Reduced awareness of pain means less use of medication, or, in the case of people who choose not to use painkillers, the complete discontinuation of potentially habit-forming and mind-numbing drugs. Hypnotic suggestions can reduce pain by actually retraining the nervous system to prevent the transmission of pain information to the brain. Relaxation is the opposite of discomfort. Hypnotic relaxation techniques ease tension and frequently results in people being less bothered or pre-occupied by pain sensations.

Practicing self-hypnosis puts the person back in charge of his mental experience. It counteracts the tendency to feel victimized and usually helps with depression. Hypnosis can help prepare people for chemotherapy and radiation and often reduces the noxious side effects of cancer treatment. Hypnosis is used extensively to prepare patients for surgery, reducing the need for pre-procedure sedation, excessive anesthetic agents and post operative narcotics.

Practicing hypnosis can reduce emotional anguish and suffering. The emotional part of pain can be reframed to diminish the fear, anger, resentment, and stress often associated with chronic pain. The power of mind can make a tremendous difference in the amount of suffering experienced. What kind of over-all treatment plan is suitable for treating chronic pain? Psychological pain management is a combination of approaches that include cognitive/behavioral therapy to change negative thinking and self-defeating behavior, as well as hypnotherapy to decrease pain symptoms and to change the attitudes and belief systems that may be holding back your recovery. In some cases, longer-term insight-oriented psychotherapy may be necessary. Whichever methods are used, the overall goals for psychological pain management are to help you learn how to understand, predict and manage the pain cycle, how to increase your sense of control or self-efficacy, how to use coping skills to minimize pain, and how to maximize active involvement in positive life experiences in order to rebuild as satisfying a life as possible.

Breaking the Stress â?? Back Pain Cycle

One of the main causes of back pain is emotional stress and that back pain may be a signal that you are not coping well with stress. Itâ??s common knowledge that people under stress are tense and that tension can settle in your back. Even if you are experiencing constant stress, your muscles may be tightening up so often that you become used to it. But those taut, tight muscles can send a strong pain signal to your brain. The discomfort may make you wary of normal activities and, as you limit your movement and activity, your muscles become weaker and gradually de-conditioned, and more painful. This vicious cycle continues and may end up as chronic back pain. There are several things that you can do to ease stress induced back pain and break this cycle.

Reducing Stress

Once you recognize the stress in your life and the effects it has, there may be some ways to deal with it.

Breathing Exercises

One breathing technique that is helpful is 2:1 breathing. Inhale to the count of three and then exhale while you count to six. Repeat this several times

Relaxation Techniques

These techniques invoke the relaxation response which is the opposite of the stress response. Using deep breathing techniques, muscles relax and blood pressure, heart rate and respiration decrease. Progressive muscle relaxation and self-hypnosis are also helpful.

Meditation And visualization

These methods have devoted followers who have calmed their busy minds by combining imagery with breathing exercises.

Body Scan

Consider talk therapy with a stress counselor, a support group or a psychologist. Talk to your health care provider about your stress. Most people think that the mind and body are separate and function independently. Instead, they usually work together in shaping experiences. Recognizing the â??mind â?? bodyâ?? relationship is the first step in dealing with the connection and breaking the vicious stress â?? pain connection.

Pain Relief for Cancer Patients

If you suffer from cancer-related pain, you have more than one option for pain relief.

About one in three patients experience pain from cancer. The more advanced the cancer, the more likely it is that you will have pain and require some sort of pain management or pain relief.

Cancer pain can be severe or mild, and it can be constant or it may only occur once in awhile. As cancer research progresses, doctors have become quite familiar with all forms of cancer-related pain and with the pain relief options they can offer their patients.

Pain can come from treatments, from nerve pressure or from tumors. Depending on the severity and source of the pain, your doctor will prescribe aspirin, acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen, or perhaps even codeine, or stronger medications like morphine, oxycondone, or others.

In some cases, your doctor may prescribe massage, self-hypnosis, meditation, acupuncture or acupressure for pain relief.

If you plan to use medication for pain relief, you should understand that pain medications do have side effects. You may become constipated, feel confused or lethargic, or even have hallucinations in extreme cases. If your doctor gives you a prescription for pain relief, be sure to stay in touch with him or her and let the doctor know if you have symptoms or side effects.

Sometimes, the symptoms or side effects are temporary, while your body is adjusting to the new medication, and these symptoms may disappear after a week or two. If you are taking anti-inflammatory medication like Advil, ibuprofens or other medication, with frequency, be sure to have your doctor check your blood pressure and perform periodic blood work to monitor your kidney function etc.

If taken regularly, aspirin can cause ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, so you’ll want to monitor your health and symptoms carefully.
When you talk to your doctor about pain relief, your doctor will probably ask you to rate your pain on a scale of one to ten. How severe does the pain get? How often do you get the pain? What type of pain are you feeling?

With this information in mind, your doctor will recommend pain relief techniques or medications. Remember, YOU are the patient. If you do not want to take a certain medication or you would prefer a more natural method of pain management, discuss these preferences with your doctor and ask for recommendations.

If you find that you are still not able to achieve relief from the pain you feel, ask your doctor to refer you to a Pain Management clinic or specialist. All large cancer treatment programs have pain management services and these are covered by standard health insurance policies. You do not have to suffer in silence!

If you work together with your doctor and other specialists, you can find a pain management technique or combination of techniques and medication, to help you handle your cancer-related pain.

Understanding Back Pain Treatments

To understand your back pain is the best method of its treatment. If you commence taking over the counter medications, the pain may instantly stop, only to re-emerge with double vigor. Any medicine does two things, either it delivers the goods. Or it damages the goods. Either positive effects or negative side effects! Back pain treatments have to be understood in this context.
Taking unrecorded painkillers have done enough damage to back pain sufferers. It is therefore better for you to visit a pain management clinic that understands the root cause of the pain, and then commences a treatment that is suitable in your case. It is reported that over 60 % of the people who opted for the treatment at pain management clinics, regularly for a period of one year, have experienced substantial decrease in the level of suffering.
The main advantage of taking treatment in the pain management clinic is that a group of specialists take care of your problem. These health care providers normally include, apart from your family physician, psychologist, physical medicine specialist, neurologist, anesthesiologist and most importantly the physical therapist.
Pain clinics also offer non-drug therapies like physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, breathing exercises, TENS (Transcutaneoius Electrical Nerve Stimulation), self-hypnosis, biofeedback, hot and cold therapy.
Pain medications that directly and instantly relieve you of back pain include steroids to reduce inflammation, muscle relaxants and tension reducing medications. But before deciding about the clinic, examine its creditability. That is, whether it has the Certification by the American Academy of Pain Management.
By way of additional verification, please see whether the clinic holds the certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine.
Along with the medication, physical exercises and stretches go a long way in permanently getting you rid of the pain problem. The recurring back pain problem may adversely affect your day to day activities. It has a direct bearing on your working efficiency, with pain anywhere in the body, you can not concentrate.
If you take treatment on the lines indicated above, most probably you will be relieved of your back pain problem permanently. If these treatments, including physical exercises do not work, surgery is the only alternative. Surgery is again, a risky proposition. But why surgery is necessary depends upon the consensus arrived at by your personal physician in consultation with other specialists.

Misunderstandings About Hypnosis

Hypnosis refers to being in a trance like state, the kind of states that people experience naturally all the time in daily life. If you have ever been driving somewhere and have suddenly realised you have reached your destination, whilst being absorbed in thoughts about other things, if you have ever been so engrossed in a good book or movie, that you have been unaware of time or distractions, if you have ever daydreamed, then you have experienced trance.
Hypnotherapist’s use hypnotic techniques in order to induce a trance like state in the individual. Whilst the individual is in trance, the therapist makes suggestions towards the client’s goal. Hypnotherapy is based on the belief that when a person is in a trance state, conscious criticism and analysis is switched off, allowing therapy to be directed at the unconscious mind. It is also understood that the unconscious mind has access to areas of yourself that your conscious mind doesn’t. For example, people have used self-hypnosis to control pain, control physiological functions such as heart rate and solve problems, which they are unable to do consciously.
As an Occupational Therapist, therapist who often uses hypnotic techniques, at my NLP and Hypnotherapy practice, Herts for therapeutic benefits, I am aware that many people have inaccurate beliefs about hypnosis. For example, a friend asked me if I could work with her husband to make him give up smoking and pick up his socks! Two activities which he had no intention of stopping! In fact hypnotherapists cannot make people do anything they do not want to do and this will be explained along with other common misconceptions.
1. Hypnotherapists can make you do things against your will – This is not the case. During hypnosis you will be in a relaxed state and choose to follow the therapists voice and listen to the suggestions. The session relies on 100% commitment from the client, as all the work is carried out by the client in their imagination. The therapist can guide but cannot control what goes on inside your head. Therefore, if the therapist ever made any suggestions, which did not fit with your values or which you did not agree with, then you would immediately come out of your relaxed trance state. Since the success of hypnotherapy relies so much on the motivation and commitment of the client, a hypnotherapist cannot get rid of a ‘problem’ that your not that bothered about solving.
2. Hypnosis is like being in a deep sleep – Unlike sleep, during hypnosis you will actually be highly aware of your surroundings and your senses will be switched on as you concentrate and focus on the therapists voice.
3. Some people can’t be hypnotised – Most people can go into relaxed trance states, as it’s a normal experience that we have in life. A person who is particularly nervous about hypnotherapy, perhaps due to misconceptions about it, could resist going into trance if they really didn’t want too. A good hypnotherapist is able to guide a nervous client into relaxation, this can be done at the clients own pace over a few sessions.
4. Hypnosis is therapy – There is a big difference between a stage hypnotist and an experienced hypnotherapist. Hypnosis is a technique. Hypnotherapy is the therapy that is carried out during trance. A hypnotherapist must have a good understanding of clinical conditions and disorders in order to assess and treat appropriately. For this reason it’s important to ascertain what experience your hypnotherapist has.
5. I’ve had hypnotherapy and I didn’t go under! – The first time I had hypnotherapy,I had the experience of being unsure of whether I had been ’successfully’ hypnotised. The reason is that some people expect hypnosis to feel unique in some way, when it is a familiar feeling of being relaxed and highly focused, like during day-dreaming. It’s not like being anesthetised!
